Compact and Low Cost Femtosecond Laser

This femtosecond laser is fiber based, providing the potential to greatly reduce e size and manufacturing costs of ultrashort laser sources. This will lead to new applications for femtosecond lasers such as confocal and nonlinear optical microscopy, dentistry (surgery and cosmetics), micro-machining, ophthalmology (laser eye surgery), and other surgical applications (Nano-surgery and heart surgery)

Description: Dr. Hanan Anis and her team demonstrated high quality pulses that were until now, seen primarily with solid state lasers. This was achieved while maintaining the advantages of a fiber design. The high energy pulses they generated are sufficient for most applications without additional amplification or compensation.

Femtosecond fiber lasers based on this design will have the following advantages:

  • Costs below $10,000

  • 10 times size reduction (to the approximate size of a desktop computer)

  • Ease of manufacturing without the need to align bulk optics

  • High powered pulses for existing and new application for femtosecond lasers
