This traffic routing algorithm provides an advantage for networks where there is a forced path imposed through forced routing. Forced routing is seen in optical networks when governments or other organisations have mandated that traffic pass a specific server for security and monitoring purposed. Forced routing can also be imposed in wireless networks where certain nodes have power constraints and must be avoided. This forced route can greatly reduce network efficiency.
The algorithm, known as the Geographic Midpoint Algorithm was designed to optimise the path under forced routing constraints. It has demonstrated routing through the forced routes, in a path that is comparable to the optimal path that is selected by state of the art algorithms when the forced route is not imposed. It can be used in optical networks, wireless networks, and even non telecommunication networks used in the transport of goods and people.
